Garbage Disposal Will Not Turn On
If you are experiencing this problem then the first thing you want to inspect is if power is being provided to the disposal. Inspect the circuit breaker for the disposal and see if it has tripped. If so, turn it back on and see if that rectifies the problem. If so, then you will most likely want to get in touch with a professional electrical repair company to inspect the breaker to make sure it is not going bad or to see if there is any other electrical problem that could be causing this.
If the breaker is not the problem, then look under the garbage disposal, there should be a small button that is typically red on most units. This is the reset button. If the button has popped out, then the motor will have gotten too hot. This can happen whenever the garbage disposal becomes jammed or if it was left running for an extended period of time. If you there is no problem with the button then something mechanical in nature has gone wrong with the garbage disposal and you will need to have it serviced.
However, if the button was popped out, and it was due to a jam in the garbage disposal, then the jam will need to be cleared out before attempting to turn the disposal back on. When you push the reset button, you should hear a small clicking noise, if you hear this and the button pops back out again then the disposal is still jammed.
How Does a Garbage Disposal Become Jammed?
Garbage disposals can become jammed when certain types of organic materials such as corn husks, or fiber rich vegetables, bones and even utensils and glass are placed into the disposal. Most garbage disposals will not be able to grind up these types of organic material, and of course certainly none will be able to grind up silverware. Garbage disposal units will have a small hole that should be located underneath the motor towards the center. This hole should allow for a ¼” allen wrench and this will allow you to move the masher plate that is located inside of the disposal back and forth. In doing so, most of the time, it will usually free up the jam.
However, not all garbage disposals will have Allen wrench sockets. Other disposals such as these will require a more hands on approach such using a broom handle and inserting it into the disposal to try and move the masher plate back and forth, which can prove to be a much more dangerous task that the average homeowner that is not competent in what they’re doing, should not attempt themselves.
What can Cause a Garbage Disposal to Leak?
Sometimes a garbage disposal may leak. When this happens the first place to inspect would be the drain pipe to see if it is coming from there and if so the rubber gasket will most likely need to be replaced. If the disposal was recently installed then inspect the flange to make sure it is set tightly. However, if the leak appears to be coming from inside the body of the garbage disposal then you may very well need to replace the disposal.
